In response to the limitations of the generalist Inquiry-class heavy cruiser, Starfleet initiated the development of a smaller, more specialized vessel in the mid-2390s. The Duderstadt-class, inspired by the Nebula-class, took a unique approach by constructing the entire secondary hull to suit specific mission requirements rather than relying solely on mission pods. Three initial variants – scout cruiser, heavy surveyor, and diplomatic courier – were designed, each featuring powerful deflector dishes. Launched in 2397, the class is now in full production, addressing the need for a versatile yet mission-focused starship.
