Earth year 2404
Welcome to SB516! We are a Star Trek inspired role-playing club, guided entirely by the creativity and uniqueness of our members.
SB516: TNF was founded in 1990 by a small group of friends, originally as a play-by-mail game called ST: GEN. It has evolved significantly over the years into play-by-email, and now into its current form as a game played entirely on Discord. SB516 had a major relaunch in May 2023 with a complete overhaul to gameplay, club operations, management, and more.

Our Discord server serves as the hub for all gameplay and communication. If you haven't joined yet, we invite you to become a part of the community!
SB516 Canon vs. Screen Canon vs. STO
SB516 maintains it's own canon as it grows and progresses beyond screen canon. This includes additions of various technologies, ships, species, ETC.
Our approved baseline canon comes from Memory Alpha.
STO is NOT considered canon, and therefore we do not accept any information from the game as such.
Vessel Usage
All vessels used by major factions (Federation, Romulans, Klingons, ETC.) are outlined on the SB516 Fleet Alignment.
This alignment has been meticuously created and extensively critiqued to create an accurate, canon-friendly list of vessels used and their specs.
Any new vessels to be added to the fleet alignment must first be proposed and approved by the Grey Council using this form before being used in gameplay.

Speed Scales
QSD: Quantum Slipstream Drives (QSD) have a travel speed of ~5 lyrs/min (4 min/sector).
Warp: The TNG warp scale is used for gameplay, using 1 sector (20lyrs) as the distance reference. A conversion calculator can be found here.
Warp 1 = Speed of light (c) = 1 year/lyr
Warp 6 = 392.5c = 18.61 days/sector
Warp 9 = 1,516.38c = 4.82 days/sector
Warp 9.9 = 3,029.26c = 2.41 days/sector
Warp 9.95 = 3,866.92c = 1.89 days/sector
Warp 9.99 = 7,912c = 22.16 hrs/sector
Warp 9.995 (Inquiry Class) = 15.22 hrs/sector
Warp 9.998 (Odyssey Class) = 20,112.09c = 8.72 hrs/sector
Warp 9.999 (Pathfinder Class) = 32,100.64c = 5.46 hrs/sector
Warp 9.9999 = 199,516c = 52.72 min/sector
Warp 10 = Infinite speed
Impulse: Impulse engines travel at sublight speeds
Full impulse is 25% the speed of light (74,770 km/s)
Three quarters impulse is 18.75% the speed of light (56,077 km/s)
Half impulse is 12.5% the speed of light (37,385 km/s)
Quarter impulse is 6.25% the speed of light (16,665 km/s)
Ship Weaponry
SB516 vessels use a variety of ship weaponry:
Phaser Arrays are the msot standard weaponry equipped on Starfleet vessels
Phaser Cannons are a variety of weapons serving the same function
Phaser cannons is a general term for static-mounted phaser cannons (Defiant), gimbaled phaser cannons, and phaser turrets
Phaser cannons are generally more powerful than phaser arrays, but use more power
Torpedoes
Photon: Photon torpedoes are standard matter-antimatter core torpedoes equipped on all vessels with a standard yield of ~18.5 isotons.
Heavy Photon: Heavy photon torpedoes were developed by the USS Endurance-D as an upgrade to the standard photon torpedo.
These torpedoes are slightly larger in size, use more antimatter, and have two detonation chambers to increase the yield of the torpedo.
One HPT can be converted from three photon torpedoes
HPTs have a standard yield of ~37 isotons
Quantum: Quantum torpedoes are ~2.7x as destructive as photon torpedoes, and are only equipped standard on some vessels.
Quantum torpedoes have a standard yield of ~50 isotons.
Tri-Cobalt: Tri-Cobalt torpedoes are exceedingly powerful torpedoes capable of rupturing subspace.
These are special assignment torpedoes and do not come standard equipped on any vessel.
Transphasic: Transphasic torpedoes are advanced quantum torpedoes with the capability of phasing through shields.
These are special assignment torpedoes and do not come standard equipped on any vessel.
Shields and Defenses
Shields operate in arrays, and are able to be partially dropped (aft shields can be lowered while the rest of the ship remains shielded)
Objects such as shuttles that are tuned to the same shields harmonics are able to leave or board a vessel without said vessel dropping shields
SB516 vessels utilize various types of shields, though these do not affect gameplay at this time.
Some ships come equipped with ablative hull armor, which can be used when shields have collapsed.
