Ordered alongside the Sutherland-class research vessel, the Pathfinder-class design was developed in the late 2390s. Building on the success of the Intrepid-class light explorer, Starfleet aimed to create a pure science vessel with a similar space frame but enhanced capabilities. Incorporating bleeding-edge equipment from the Sutherland and the high top speed of the Vesta, the Pathfinder sacrificed long-duration missions for tactical independence. Construction of the prototype, Pathfinder, began in 2395, with the launch occurring in 2398. Other units came online later that year, and after successful shakedown cruises, the class officially entered service in 2400.
